Exhibits
The processes of the human body can be smelly, slimy and - thanks to this new, interactive exhibit - also highly educational. Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, based on the best-selling book, uses animatronics and imaginative exhibits to explore the good, the bad and the downright ugly about runny noses, body odor and much more.

Now you can teach your children about regurgitation at Grossology's "Vomit Center," which demonstrates how and why we vomit. Everyone thinks "tooting" is funny and at the "Toot Toot" exhibit, visitors can learn why passing gas makes noise. Next time little Johnny burps in church, you can remind him of the "Burp Machine" exhibit that explained the reaction of acids in the stomach. The whole family can say "Peeeeeee Yuuuuuuu" together when they explore the not-so-funny smells a body can create at the "Sniff Sniff" exhibit. Kids are naturally curious about how their bodies work and Grossology let's them get down and dirty with the facts, taking the pressure off the parents.

Here are just a few activities you can enjoy:
  • Visit the Vomit center and learn the many reasons humans vomit.
  • Stop by the Toot Toot exhibit to create different sounds that replicate the physics of gas.
  • Help a larger-than-life cartoon character release a giant burp by pumping soda pop from a three-foot can to make him drink and increase his stomach pressure.
  • Learn how food is digested as it passes through the gastrointestinal system by watching an X-ray machine.
  • Find out what causes runny noses, sneezes and allergies with Nigel Nose-it-All. Microscope stations at this exhibit also feature things that cause runny noses.
  • Play surgery and attempt to remove organ parts from a body without touching the sides of the patient.
  • Match the body odors with the correct area of the body: arm pits, lower intestine, mouth or feet.
  • Using a computer game, act as a kidney by using a track ball to grab waste elements and remove them from the blood stream.
  • Test your Grossology IQ with a multiple-choice challenge or play the Grossology CD with exploratory labs, puzzles games and other computer activities.

Grossology Credits & Sponsorships

Grossology's appearance at MASM is made possible by a new collaboration among seven Arkansas museums, the Arkansas Discovery Network, and is funded by a generous grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. This exhibit is locally sponsored by Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Grossology is the combined effort of Science World; Advanced Exhibits, LLC; and Grossology author Sylvia Branzei. As a teacher, writer, curriculum designer and microbiologist, Branzei designed Grossology as a tool that would make learning fun. "This is science in disguise," she says. "If we teach students in their own words, they'll understand better and actually learn something."
